Oliver, a young intellectual from England, journeys to the quiet French countryside in pursuit of mentorship from the enigmatic and affluent Jacques Lebeau. The trip stems from a personal tragedy: his legal guardian had succumbed to an unexplained illness that neither Oliver’s studies nor available treatments could cure. Midway through his academic journey, his guardian passed, forcing Oliver to briefly return home. But his sorrow deepened when he discovered that the caretaker he entrusted had mismanaged the funds and disgracefully arranged for the cheapest disposal of the remains.

This betrayal planted the first seed of Oliver’s disillusionment with both society and the state of modern medicine. Determined to transcend these limitations, he ventured into unconventional approaches—exploring alternative medicines and radical theories that promised what mainstream methods could not. However, his unorthodox ideas were met with derision from his peers, leaving Oliver isolated, his brilliance unappreciated. He continued his work quietly, without official recognition, forging small successes from the shadows.

Everything changes when Jacques, living in seclusion, casually inquires about one of his servants' recent errands. During their travels, the servant happened to meet Oliver, noticing his intense interest in both science and the arcane. Captivated by this chance encounter, Jacques becomes intrigued by Oliver’s unconventional pursuits. He extends an invitation, hoping that in his remote estate, Oliver might finally find the freedom and resources to pursue the answers mainstream academia denied him. 

This marks the beginning of a partnership between two minds—both driven by their defiance of convention, both seeking to unlock the deeper mysteries of the world that lie beyond the reach of ordinary science.
