Bio
Kristoff is a true foil for Peter. While he too began life as a noble in the Von Becker family, his decision to travel the European continent as a soldier for hire left him estranged from his namesake. Holding no ties to his Prussian ancestry, he quickly amassed a good deal of wealth without his family’s aid. Despite this, he chose to settle in a modest cottage near the River Ruhr with a young dancer he wed by the name of Melissa, or Missy for short. He would go off, serve a commission in a far away conflict, and return to her with wealth, be it soldier’s pay or the spoils of war.
Von Becker quickly found himself an artilleryman in the ranks of the Royal Horse Artillery sent to the Crimea to fight the Russians. This conflict was different; a modern war with new tools of death being brought to bear against the tactics of old. Trenches, exploding shells, and repeating pistols ripped men apart, and for the first time, it was to be captured on a new tool known as the “camera”. During a charge from Russian Hussars, Kristoff was gravely wounded, requiring his leg to be amputated.
His career as a soldier over, the young man limped home on crutches when he couldn’t catch a locomotive or a carriage. When he returned home however, he found his little cottage to be little more than ash, and Missy with it. Were he a mere week sooner, he would have been there to save her from the freak accident.
The still wealthy vagrant found himself wandering Europe, crawling inside a bottle in every tavern he could find, unable to shake the pain of existence. It was in a small bar in France that Kristoff was plucked up by a mysterious Frenchman, and whisked away to a new life.
